Puri Beach
One of the holiest
pilgrimage centers of India. It is gifted with many fine
beaches. The beaches are wide and ideal for beach sports.
But due to the violent sea waves, water sports are many a
time not favoured.
The Beach of Puri is also known as one of India's finest
beaches. You can easily locate scores of hatted fishermen
navigating the tourists through the magnificent breakers
rolling from the Bay of Bengal. Puri Beach is an exciting
place for viewing romantic sunsets and sunrises.
Puri is 60-km from Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Orissa
and 35-km from Konark on the Marine Drive. For centuries
now, the beach at Puri has been the venue of countless
pilgrims taking the traditional purification dip. Puri is
the abode of Lord Jagannath and considered one of the most
important Hindu pilgrimage destination.
Jagannath Temple
The spectacular Jagannath temple, one of the holiest temples
in the country is located very closely to the beach. The
beach is also the venue for the famous dance and music
festival held every year at the beach
Gopalpur Beach
16 km from
Berhampur, the Gopalpur-on-sea is a popular beautiful sandy
beach. Clusters of coconut and palm trees, white sand dunes
overgrown with casuarinas plantation separate the beach from
the blue waters of the sea. During the days of Kalingas it
was known as the port of Paloura from which traders sailed
as far as Java, Bali and Sumatra and piled up wealth dealing
in silk and pearl. Later it was a transit point to export
sugar and cheap labourers for the tea gardens of Assam in
north eastern India. The crumbling walls and the pillars of
an ancient jetty together with some crumbling bungalows are
witness to its swinging maritime past.
Chandipur Beach
A divine beach
resort of Orissa located 16 kms away from Balasore. A unique
beach in which each day the seawater recedes about 5 kms
during low tide and advances to the shoreline again during
high tide. |
